No matter if you bought a Malibu Maxx with a sunroof or not, that glass panel over the back seats stayed.
Have a Maxx SS.

I have a very strange and unsubstantiated love for the Maxx

It's okay, I do too.

Yep, one of my best friends has an '06 Maxx with just the back glass panel. The back seat is incredibly roomy. I wish they made a Maxx version of the '08-'12 bodystyle, I would have hunted one of those down.

What is it for?

I had one of these for a rental in NoVa a few years ago, what a POS. It was tan on tan on tan

I didn't know this, but the backs seats slid back and forth on tracks. You could have cargo space, or limo like leg room.
A new version would be awesome. Because this generation of Malibu was a bit of a POS as it was.

Just a fixed sunroof type thing for small children to look out of.

That color combo. Ew.

I didn't know it slid either, he must have had it all the way back when I was in there. He's been happy with the car, it's been reliable, but it's nowhere near as nice to drive or be in than my '11 Malibu.

huh. it would be really cool if it were removable, and when it is off the hatch can slide up and forward to a near-vertical position for more loading action.

oh yeah I've always inexplicably loved the Maxx SS

I'm sure they're better than the generation they replaced (my mom had an '05 Malibu Classic as a rental one time, even 7 year old me could tell it was horrible), but yeah, the next generation was definitely a step in the right direction in terms of drive-ability and interior quality.

Oh yeah, it was a definite step up from the previous body style. My mother-in-law had a '98. That car puked its engine at 25k miles (The 3.1L V6 liked to eat head gaskets). I sold it for her a few years ago, with a whopping 40k miles on the clock.

It was basically a Vectra Hatchback I think. Here is Clarkson reviewing it and showing a demo of the back seats:
